When starting a new technical project with high thermal or electrical requirements, the choice of the right insulation material plays a central role.
DOTHERM materials offer a wide range of properties - from excellent heat resistance to outstanding electrical insulation and mechanical stability.
To select the right material, you should first understand the application in detail.
Below are the most important questions you should ask yourself - just as an engineer or developer would before starting a project with DOTHERM.
First, I think about what task the part has in my application:
Does it serve as thermal insulation, electrical support, mechanical support element or heat protection?
Should it separate two metallic components, protect a zone or minimize heat loss?
The answer to this question shows whether I need a thermally, electrically or mechanically oriented DOTHERM material.
Then I define the real operating conditions:
What is the continuous operating temperature - and what peak temperatures can occur?
Is there contact with moisture, oils, steam or chemicals?
Is the component used inside a machine or in an open environment?
DOTHERM materials cover a wide temperature range - from around 200 °C to over 1200 °C.
If the part has to withstand constant heat or temperature changes, types such as DOTHERM 1100 HD or DOTHERM 1200 are ideal.
Not every insulating material is automatically solid or dimensionally stable.
I therefore ask myself:
Does the part have to absorb mechanical forces (pressure, tension, bending)?
Should it remain dimensionally stable even in the heat?
What tolerances are permissible?
Some DOTHERM grades are very rigid and pressure-resistant - perfect for structural insulating panels - while others are more elastic and better at compensating for thermal expansion.
If my application involves current, voltage or coils, electrical insulation is crucial:
What dielectric strength (kV/mm) is required?
Does the material have to remain insulating even at high temperatures or humidity?
Is there a risk of partial discharges or electric arcs?
DOTHERM materials based on mineral fibers and special resins provide excellent electrical insulation - even under extreme conditions.
I also think about the final shape of the component:
Do I need sheets, rods, tubes or a machined precision part?
Is the machining done internally or should DOTHERM/Megatron manufacture the part according to the drawing?
What quantity is planned - prototype, small series or series production?
DOTHERM materials are available both as raw formats and as customized components.
Each DOTHERM quality has its own strength:
DOTHERM 600M → good thermal insulation up to approx. 600 °C, easy to machine.
DOTHERM 700 / 800M → higher mechanical strength and temperature resistance.
DOTHERM 1000 / 1100 HD / 1200 → for extreme conditions up to over 1200 °C.
DOTHERM materials are characterized by particularly low thermal conductivity and high temperature resistance - suitable for application temperatures of up to 1,200 °C. Ideal for plant, machine and furnace construction.
The materials offer excellent dielectric properties and mechanical strength, even under high-voltage conditions. Used in power electronics, electromobility and energy technology.
