Gauss (in Swiss or under English-speaking influence also Gauss; unit symbols: Gs, G; after Carl Friedrich Gauss) is the unit of magnetic flux density in the electromagnetic CGS system.

AlNiCo and ferrite are the best known magnetic material types. The demand for ever smaller and stronger magnets has led to the development of rare earth-based materials. These include samarium cobalt (SmCo) and neodymium (NdFeB). These grades develop very strong magnetic force even at very small dimensions.
